Blocked Drains in Penshurst, Cleared Properly

This suburb sits on the high ground between Hurstville and Mortdale, and that ridge position shapes almost everything about its drains.

Federation and interwar bungalows line the leafy streets here, many of them heritage-listed like West Maling and the 1888 Kintail mansion. Double-brick and full-brick construction was standard for the era, and so was clay drainage underneath it.

Slope does the rest of the damage. Runoff on a ridge has to go somewhere, and on these streets it travels downhill fast, loading up the drains at the bottom of every block before it reaches the stormwater system.

A former creek line still runs beneath McRaes Reserve, now piped as underground stormwater. In a heavy downpour that old watercourse can surcharge, backing pressure up into yards well above where the pipe actually sits.

Mature street trees add a second front. Established root systems along Laycock Road and Penshurst Avenue push into the joints of drains that predate root barriers by the best part of a century.

Two problems, one cause each: slope pushes water where old clay can't cope, and roots exploit every joint that water pressure has already weakened. CCTV inspection tells us which one we're dealing with before anyone lifts a shovel.

Both patterns share a fix that starts the same way. A camera down the line shows us exactly which joint has gone, so the quote reflects the actual job rather than a guess.

The local railway station has run since 1890, and the shopping strips either side of it, Penshurst Street and the smaller Bridge Street precinct known as The Strand, are where a lot of daily life happens.

Older shopfronts here carry the same vintage plumbing as the homes around them. A cafe or restaurant kitchen pushing more grease and food waste through century-old drainage is a different failure mode to a root-blocked house line, and it's one we see regularly on both strips.

Families make up most of the households here, and most of them own rather than rent. That tends to mean long-term residents who know their own drain history, which helps us get to the actual cause faster on a call-out.

Peakhurst is home turf, and the ridge streets here sit squarely on our regular run through Georges River Council territory.

That's not nothing on a ridge with this much variety underground. Heritage bungalows, a piped creek line, and root-hungry established gardens each need a slightly different read, and we usually have a fair idea which one we're looking at before the camera goes anywhere.
